Acoustic neuroma is a type of slow-growing, benign tumor that arises from the cells surrounding the nerve behind the ear that is concerned with the sense of balance. As it grows, the tumor compresses the surrounding nerves and brain. In almost all cases, acoustic neuroma only occurs on one side.
