This type of tumor arises from cells in the membrane covering the brain, and gradually grows larger until it starts to press against the brain from the outside. This is one of the most common types of brain tumor and is found more frequently in women, with most occurrences being benign. Meningioma is sometimes discovered incidentally during a routine brain checkup without having produced any symptoms. This type of tumor may also infiltrate the skull bones surrounding the brain.
