Artery dissection

Cause of artery dissection

Cerebral artery dissection usually occurs in men in their 30s through 50s, and is more common in people with hypertension. Its direct cause is unknown.

Rarely, it may happen when a blood vessel is stretched due to a head or neck injury.

Cases in individuals with abnormal vascular walls (such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome patients) have also been reported.

Cerebral artery dissection can occur in any of the comparatively large cerebral vessels. In Japanese people, the most common location of dissection is the vertebral artery.
